Pepper House
Come for the ceiling, not the coffee. Ask at the desk which rooms are open — it changes.
GingerIt is down the lane past the barber, the one with the blue shutter, and you will walk past the entrance twice before you find it. Everyone does. The doorway is a gap in a wall and there is no sign worth the name.
Inside, the courtyard opens up and the noise of Bazaar Road stops completely. That is the thing worth coming for. The café at the back does a fine enough filter coffee and an ordinary sandwich; nobody has ever come back here for the sandwich.
Ask at the desk before you climb. The upstairs rooms are not always open, and whoever is on will tell you either way rather than let you walk up to a locked door.

The hours on this card are illustrative. They show what a posted-versus-observed fact looks like; nobody has stood outside this door with a notebook. Do not plan a morning on them.
We haven't checked whether the upstairs gallery is open to the public this month. Ask at the desk.

What we've written about here
-
The Biennale year that nearly did not happen
Three weeks before opening, half the rooms were still a warehouse.
-
Inside the viewing room
What a gallery keeps upstairs, and why it is rarely open.
What's on here
Times here are illustrative. This is the shape of the what's-on list, not a researched programme — events are not recorded yet. Check with the venue before you go.
